BIOGRAPHY

Over the last two decades, Ramesh Balasubramaniam's contribution to the field of Oral Medicine has improved the health and well-being of many patients. As a renowned Oral Medicine Specialist, his role as a consultant at hospitals, conducting research, instructing university students and trainees in Oral Medicine, and delivering lectures to other professionals has served to advance the fields of Orofacial Pain, Temporomandibular Disorders, Oral Diseases, and Dental Sleep Medicine and led to improved care and quality of life for patients.

Ramesh's career began in 2000, after earning his Bachelor of Dental Science degree from the University of Western Australia (UWA) and beginning his practice in general dentistry. In 2006, he completed a three-year training programme at the University of Kentucky, culminating in a fellowship and certificate in Orofacial Pain. During that time, he also completed his Master of Science degree in Orofacial Pain and underwent training in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine, expanding his education. In 2008, Ramesh completed both specialist training in Oral Medicine and a fellowship in Interdisciplinary Geriatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, an accomplishment which led to his becoming the Chief Resident in Oral Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Division of Oral Medicine. He was also awarded the Robert Schattner Award for the most outstanding resident in Oral Medicine. During his time in America, he passed the board examination and was awarded a diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain.

Since the completion of his studies, Ramesh's many contributions to Oral Medicine have led to him being recognised as a leader in the field. To serve and promote the specialty of Oral Medicine, he was a founding member and fellow of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia and past president of the Oral Medicine Academy of Australasia (2019-2022). He was also a founding member of the Dental Specialists Society of Western Australia. He was appointed as the first Oral Medicine Specialist at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in 2009 (now Perth Children's Hospital) and was an instrumental part of the team that succeeded in having Oral Medicine recognised as a registrable specialty in Western Australia that same year. He also worked tirelessly, and successfully, to broaden the scope of Oral Medicine in Western Australia to include the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain.

Ramesh has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to several chapters in various texts. In addition, he has served as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals and has served as an editor for 3 books, notably being co-editor and co-author of the authoritative comprehensive textbook "Contemporary Oral Medicine”, published by Springer in 2019.

Ramesh has delivered over 200 invited lectures nationally and internationally in the areas of Orofacial Pain, Temporomandibular Disorders, Oral Diseases and Dental Sleep Medicine. He has membership in several organisations including the Australian Dental Association, Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Australasian Sleep Association. In recognition for his contributions to the advancement of dentistry, Ramesh is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, International College of Dentists, and Pierre Fauchard Academy. Perhaps his greatest accolade is being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021 for his contributions to dentistry in Australia.

Ramesh continues to devote his life to the specialty of Oral Medicine. Aside from directing Australia’s largest private oral medicine practice, Perth Oral Medicine and Dental Sleep Centre, he is a consultant at the Perth Children’s Hospital and the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia. He is an Associate Professor at the Dental School of University of Western Australia and has been actively involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching and research for over 20 years. Ramesh is the current discipline lead in Oral Medicine and program convenor of the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Oral Medicine.
